Four Corners (Navajo) Mine

Dreaming New Mexico

The Navajo Mine is 36,000 acres on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico containing highly valuable coal deposits to which the Navajo have in fact given up their title through long-term lease agreements with BHP- Utah International Inc.

On land once grazed by traditional Navajo sheepherders, strip mining scours the earth to expose coal seams used to fuel the Four Corners Power Plant which in turn provides power for 300,000 households in New Mexico, Arizona, California and Texas.
